“Here I am, Lord”: perpetual vows in Brazil

15 July 2025

Born and raised in São Cristóvão, Sergipe, Brazil, Sister Lúcia is the fourth of five siblings and the only daughter in the family.

She grew up in a household where religious faith was a guiding presence. From an early age, she was involved in the ministries of the Church, which helped shape her outlook, deepen her sensitivity, and attune her heart to the “things of God”.

Discovering Sion and her vocation

It was in this context that, in 2010, Sister Lúcia met the sisters of Our Lady of Sion through a youth group called “Sion Jovem”. Through her volunteer work in the OASIS Project, a social initiative for families in vulnerable situations developed by the sisters of Sion in her hometown, she began to discern her calling to religious life within the Congregation of Notre Dame de Sion. The following year, she began her formation in the Congregation and on 5 July 2025, with joy and gratitude, she professed her perpetual vows.

Rooted in the Word

What Sr Lucia feels makes her a sister of Sion, and inspires her to remain so forever through her perpetual profession, is her deep love and reverence for the Sacred Scripture and God’s people. Although her professional background is in nursing, it is with this same love that she seeks to make a difference wherever she goes, bringing the touch of Sion’s spirituality, rooted in the Word of God and in commitment to His people.

A sacred and joyful celebration

The celebration of her perpetual vows took place in Aracaju, the capital of her home state, where Sr Lúcia was able to share this sacred moment with other Sion sisters, NDS associates, family members, and friends. The ceremony was presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Aracaju, Dom Josafá Menezes da Silva.

This day had been long dreamed of and carefully prepared over the past seven years, ever since Sr Lúcia made her first vows. Since then, she had already nurtured in her heart the desire to celebrate this moment with deep love and devotion, proclaiming her lifelong YES to God.

Every detail of this celebration was lovingly prepared by God in His infinite goodness, revealing His tender presence in every gesture, every person, and every moment lived. According to her brother Robério, “the liturgy felt as if the Kingdom of Heaven touched the earth, enveloping everything in grace and eternity.”

In his homily, the bishop stated: “When a young woman leaves her family to profess the vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity, she chooses to follow the same path as God, the path of the one who offers Himself, who lives, and who gives Himself fully, so that others may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Echoes of the day

Patrícia was moved as she witnessed the religious consecration of her dear friend, and saw her take such a deep and self-giving step: “Her ‘yes’ to God, through the perpetual vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity in the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion, is a true testimony of love and faith that touches everyone around her,” she said. “She has always been a light in the way she cares for others, in her words, and in the sweet and genuine way she lives her faith with simplicity. What a joy it is to know she has chosen to love and serve so wholeheartedly.”

Another friend, Ellen, admired Lúcia’s  devotion: “From such a young age, the Lord called you,”she said, “And you responded with joy and serenity, determined to walk this path. He called you in a unique and special way, He called you by name: Sr Lúcia, who, day after day, lovingly offers herself to meet the most vulnerable.”

Nursing teacher, Lorenna, summed up the spirit of the day when she spoke of her immeasurable happiness to be part of this very special moment. “My eternal student, dear friend, and now, definitively, Sister Lúcia. May Our Lady guide and protect you always.”
