Vocation: creating spaces to listen, discern, and accompany

15 May 2026

The call to religious life is lived in a world that is constantly changing, and so too must be the ways it is listened for, nurtured, and shared.

For the Congregation of Notre Dame de Sion, this reality invites a renewed way of understanding and promoting vocation – the latter not as a task for a few, but as a shared journey of listening, accompaniment, and hope lived both within Sion communities and alongside those who are searching.

Creating spaces of encounter

Over the past two years, the Congregation has made an effort to create spaces where sisters, members of the wider Family of Sion, friends and lay partners involved in pastoral vocation can come together through a series of online gatherings across countries. These encounters aim to support, inspire and strengthen those who take part, especially young people who are searching for meaning, direction, and purpose in their lives.

Listening across cultures

The gatherings have offered a valuable forum for sharing experiences, questions, and hopes. By listening to one another, participants found out how vocation is lived and nurtured in different cultural contexts.

In a time when religious communities are becoming smaller, such encounters open wider horizons and serve as a reminder of belonging to something broader than any one group or region.

Towards the end of the year, a large online gathering brought together people from around the world, with a guest speaker from Kenya. It was an opportunity to examine essential questions together: What is a vocation? What qualities are needed to accompany others in discernment? What does it mean to be a vocation promoter? How can people be invited to listen to God’s call in their lives today?

Reflecting on the mission today

These reflections renewed energy and opened new possibilities for collaboration in sharing the life and charism of Sion. They also invited deeper thought on what vocation means specifically for the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion: what characterises the Sion vocation ministry, and how it can speak to people today.

Rooted in the charism of Sion

The vocation entrusted to the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion within the Church is deeply rooted in the Word of God and in relationship with Jewish people.

The history of the Congregation reflects this special call. Théodore and Alphonse Ratisbonne, two Jewish brothers, came to Christian faith and recognised God’s call to respond. What is extraordinary is that Fr. Theodore went on to found a community that became the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion, and Fr. Alphonse joined him, sharing in the same call and mission.

The community born of this response carries a particular responsibility within the Church, understood as its vocation or charism. Each congregation contributes its own gift to the diversity of the Church, where every group has a unique role and mission. Remaining faithful to this specific calling is essential; otherwise, something vital is lost, not only for the Congregation itself, but for the Church as a whole.

New possibilities and new challenges

Today, new possibilities are emerging. The Congregation continues to learn, reflect, and seek better ways to live and share its unique vocation. Differences in culture, language, and local realities may lead to diverse approaches in pastoral vocation; these differences are also gifts that invite creativity, collaboration, and a deep trust that God continues to call people in many ways.

At the same time, the digital world presents both an opportunity and a challenge. As more people look for connection through social media, the Congregation faces the question of how to be present in these spaces in ways that are authentic, meaningful, and rooted in the charism of Sion.

Walking with those who are searching

Looking to the future, NDS hopes to continue building these spaces of encounter and formation. There is a growing desire to work more closely together across countries, sharing resources, and exploring new ways of reaching out, especially to young women who may be wondering about their path in religious life.

Discerning vocation often begins with a simple question: What is God calling me to be?

By walking together, listening deeply, and accompanying one another, this question can become a path of joy, not only for individuals but for whole communities.

Those who find themselves asking such questions are not alone. The Sisters of Our Lady of Sion seek to walk alongside those who are searching for meaning, direction, and purpose, offering spaces of listening, dialogue, and discernment in which each person can explore their own path, with questions, hopes, and a presence that are also part of the life journey of our Congregation.
