A joyful welcome to Pope Leo XIV

10 May 2025

As the bells of St. Peter’s proclaim the news, we join the universal Church in embracing the election of Pope Leo XIV.

With roots in North America and a missionary journey shaped as an Augustinian in South America, in particular Peru, Pope Leo’s life reflects a path of deep faith, humility and care for others.

His inaugural message to the world, marked by peace and love, moved us profoundly. His reference to Mary, on the feast of Our Lady of Pompeii, touched our Marian hearts and reminded us of the Church’s nurturing presence in the world.

In taking the name Leo, the Holy Father stands in a rich tradition. Saint Leo the Great, Bishop of Rome in the 5th century, was a pillar of strength and wisdom in an era of great social change. Centuries later, Pope Leo XIII shepherded the Church through the challenges of the industrial age and mass migration, offering a prophetic voice for social justice.

This legacy found its living expression in Pope Leo’s first words: an appeal for peace and dialogue that fills us with renewed hope.

The Augustinians have a hymn whose chorus affirms: “We are the flame of compassion, intelligence, and heart!” May these words be an auspice for the Pontificate of Pope Leo XIV.

A wave of celebration sweeps across St Peter’s Square at the appearance of white smoke.
