The Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion will host a webinar in Australia led by art historian Dr. Claire Renkin to explore how Jews have been depicted in Christian art over the centuries.
The talk will be in English and will start at 4.30 pm, Melbourne time, on Tuesday 8 September.
Dr. Renkin will use art from different periods of the Christian era to demonstrate how in medieval and early modern Europe visual images too often served to reinforce defamatory stereotypes of Jews, and she will survey how some of the most familiar biblical stories promoted anti-Jewish visual rhetoric. The presentation will invite discussion of both how visual images manipulated narrative and of how we today might interrogate the long-term impact of such artefacts.
