1927 : Transfer to Lyon

IX - April 2006

Palais de Justice et colline de FourvièreThe year began in Grandbourg in a very obscure and hidden way, in the shadow of Our Father’s tomb. Thanks to the charity of our Mothers, to whom we are grateful, our trio found there a few months of a truly recollected life that was fully occupied with God. Our rule was already substantially what it will remain from now on : prayer, solitude, silence, work. […]

Nevertheless, our Mother General’s solicitude had foreseen a place that was less close and where we were less known; the time came for us to lead a personal existence.

(Sionian Letter – 1927, written by M. Christine)

On March 23, at First Vespers of the feast of St. Gabriel, we received a letter from Mother Emilie announcing our transfer to Lyon; we will leave Grandbourg on the morning of April 1, and after a day in Paris, we will be in Lyon on the 2nd.
(M. Christine : Note on the beginning- March 23)

Abril 2nd, 1927

  • Farewell to the Mother House and to everything.
  • A wonderful reception in Lyon; we began at once to observe the rule that our Mothers had revised.

Our Mother General had planned that we be installed in a house that responds perfectly to our needs. It is situated at the bottom of a Sion property, but it is completely independent. It towers above Lyon, as it is on the side of the Fourvière hill, with the famous sanctuary at the summit ; the house basically consists of three stories with a pleasant garden, and it has a magnificent view and very pure air. But … it was occupied by tenants, and we didn’t know how to get them to leave. Finally the Blessed Virgin came to our aid in a very unexpected way, for while we were waiting for the 2nd and 3rd floors to be freed, the first one was unexpectedly vacated. […]

It would neither take a long time nor be difficult to introduce you to our four walls; for they hold four rooms plus the kitchen and a few damp corners that we have already been able to make habitable. Of the four rooms, the first is both the sacristy and the parlor, the second is a pretty chapel, the third is a dormitory with two beds, so you can wisely conclude that the fourth is… everything else! A cell, the refectory, the assembly room, etc., etc. And now that you know our present monastery, you will understand the necessity to ask the Lord to give us space for vocations, which are announcing themselves in a very consoling manner.

God wants to lead us by the road of obedience. After thinking that our rule would be strict, it has been made very much gentler by our Mothers – an answer to prayer so as to know whether we should have a life with an austere Rule.
Holy Week was spent entirely in grand silence; we must ask to introduce that into our customs. During that time, I came to the conviction and I am resolved to live obedience in everything.

N. D. de Sion - LyonThe priests we consulted are unanimous in their assessment: the life we are leading is considered “austere” and will surely bring great blessings to Israel as well as to the Congregation.
(Note on the beginning)

Retreat with Fr. Charton August 6 – 15:

“First of all, above all remain Sisters of Sion; do not aim at imitating any particular contemplative community, remain Sisters of Sion. – Be pliable to the way Providence leads you and to your major superiors. Do not be surprised if there are differences between how you see things, your desires and reality: God leads everything.”
(Note on the beginning)

“We feel ever more
that love is our way,
that of Mlle. Humann
and of our good Father,
the way he so recommended
to his daughters.”
